Not enough information: When sports needs honesty instead of fabrication

One night, I opened a sports analysis file that contained nine fully labeled sections but no actual content inside. There was no match name, no game version, no financial figure, no player name, and no date. Everything repeated the same phrase: “not enough information.” As a sports reporter, I once thought a sports story always had to be hot. If there was no news, I had to create news. If there was no data, I had to rely on intuition. That mistake forced me to publish three corrections in seventy-two hours. Since then, I have learned that saying “I don’t know” can be a professional act of honesty. An empty analysis is not necessarily a failed analysis. It reveals the health of the data system behind the sport. Many leagues, including Vietnamese football, still keep contracts, salaries and medical records scattered inside private messages and unrecorded meetings. When data is absent, journalists must not fill the gap with imagination. Instead, they should explain why the gap exists. I once thought financial fair play was a real rule. After a summer with no football, I understood that the rule could be a shadow, and club owners were very good at shadow play. The empty fields in an analysis can be a technical failure, but they can also be the result of someone deleting information on purpose. Good sports media must keep an investigative attitude. Before publishing a long analysis, ask: do I have enough data? If not, say so. A reader will respect honesty more than an empty conclusion. Sports will always produce surprises, but reporting should not create fake surprises. It should be built on evidence. When evidence is missing, the most professional sentence is: “not enough information.”
