Atlanta Hawks: A Summer of Smart Deals and the Depth Equation

The Atlanta Hawks' summer was not flashy. There were no blockbuster trades, no hundred-million-dollar contracts. But if you read the roster sheet closely, you see a clear message: this team is betting on depth, flexibility, and a defensive system designed to choke opponents from the perimeter. Last season, the Hawks finished 46–36, sixth in the East, and lost in the first round. They started slow but after the All-Star break, they were the most improved team in 27 years in net rating. They went from -1.3 (19th) before the break to +9.7 (4th) after it. That surge came from a trade: sending Trae Young to Washington for CJ McCollum. With McCollum, the Hawks went 27–14, climbing from ninth to sixth place in the East. They had the league's toughest remaining schedule? Actually they had a softer schedule – only eight of their 20 post-break wins came against teams with winning records. But they also beat the Knicks twice in the first round, more than any other opponent of the eventual champions. This season, Atlanta added Luguentz Dort, Kingston Flemings, Zuby Ejiofor, Ryan Nembhard, Henri Veesaar, and Aaron Wiggins. These aren't All-Stars, but they fit specific roles. Dort is a perimeter stopper, Wiggins is a scoring spark off the bench, Flemings is a raw prospect. The Hawks' perimeter defense is elite with Dyson Daniels, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and Dort. Daniels is a passing-lane nightmare, Alexander-Walker won Most Improved Player after averaging 20.8 points on 45.9% FG, 39.9% 3P, and 90.2% FT. Dort brings championship-level tenacity from Oklahoma City. But Jalen Johnson is the key. He earned his first All-Star and All-NBA selection with 22.5 points, 10.3 rebounds, 7.9 assists, and 1.2 steals. The lineup of McCollum, Alexander-Walker, Daniels, Johnson, and Okongwu posted a +20.3 net rating. That's a terrifying number. But they never played with Dort or Wiggins. Coach Quin Snyder likes forcing turnovers and launching nearly 40 threes per game. He has plenty of shooters. But the Hawks ranked 14th in offensive efficiency and 10th in defensive efficiency. Improvement is possible but not guaranteed with so many new pieces. Aaron Wiggins, the breakout candidate, never played more than 24.2 minutes per game in five seasons with the Thunder. He averaged 12 points once. But he's a career 48.7% shooter from the field and 38% from three. He knows how to win – he was on the 2026 championship team and the 2026 Western Conference finalist. The Hawks got no young players or future picks in the Trae Young trade. They are all-in on the present. That puts pressure on McCollum, who is 34, and on Snyder to manage a deep but potentially volatile roster. Preseason will be crucial. Flemings needs to learn from McCollum. The backup power forward spot behind Johnson is a battle between Mouhamed Gueye, Asa Newell, and Zuby Ejiofor. Key matchups include the season opener vs. Orlando on Oct. 21, a rematch with the Knicks on Nov. 29, Trae Young's return on Feb. 1, a clash with Miami on Feb. 8 before the trade deadline, and a brutal road stretch that ends with a game in Philadelphia on April 4. The Hawks have a deep roster, but depth is not quality if you can't find roles for everyone. The numbers look good on paper, but the real test is on the court. As I always say, numbers don't lie, but the people who arrange them might. The Hawks have a beautiful spreadsheet. Can they turn it into wins?
